« C’est moi, Mesha, fils de Kamosh(gad), roi de Moab, le Dibonite. Mon père a régné trente ans sur Moab et moi, j’ai régné après mon père. J’ai construit ce sanctuaire pour Kamosh de Qerihoh, (sanctuaire) de salut car il m’a sauvé de tous les agresseurs et il m’a fait me réjouir de tous mes ennemis. Omri fut roi d’Israël et opprima Moab pendant de longs jours, car Kamosh était irrité contre son pays. Son fils lui succéda et lui aussi il dit : “J’opprimerai Moab”. De mes jours, il a parlé (ainsi), mais je me suis réjoui contre lui et contre sa maison. Israël a été ruiné à jamais. Omri s’était emparé du pays de Madaba et (Israël) y demeura pendant son règne et une partie du règne de son fils, à savoir quarante ans : mais de mon temps Kamosh l’a habité. J’ai bâti Ba’al-Me’on et j’y fis le réservoir, et j’ai construit Qiryatan. L’homme de Gad demeurait dans le pays de ’Atarot depuis longtemps, et le roi d’Israël avait construit ’Atarot pour lui-même. J’attaquai la ville et je la pris. Je tuai tout le peuple de la ville pour réjouir Kamosh et Moab. J’emportai de là l’autel de Dodoh et je le traînai devant la face de Kamosh à Qeriyot où je fis demeurer l’homme de Saron et celui de Maharot. Et Kamosh me dit : “Va, prends Neboh à Israël”. J’allai de nuit et je l’attaquai depuis le lever du jour jusqu’à midi. Je la pris et je tuai tout, à savoir sept mille hommes et garçons, femmes, filles et concubines parce que je les avais voués à ’Ashtar-Kamosh. J’emportai de là les vases de Yahwé et je les traînai devant la face de Kamosh. Le roi d’Israël avait bâti Yahas et il y demeura lors de sa campagne contre moi. Kamosh le chassa de devant moi. Je pris deux cents hommes de Moab, tous ses chefs, et j’attaquai Yahas et je la pris pour l’annexer à Dibon. J’ai construit Qerihoh, le mur du parc et celui de l’acropole, j’ai construit ses portes et ses tours. J’ai bâti le palais royal et j’ai fait les murs de revêtement du réservoir pour les eaux, au milieu de la ville. Or, il n’y avait pas de citerne à l’intérieur de la ville, à Qerihoh, et je le dis à tout le peuple : “Faites- vous chacun une citerne dans votre maison”. J’ai fait creuser les fossés (autour) de Qerihoh par les prisonniers d’Israël. J’ai construit Aro’er et j’ai fait la route de l’Arnon. J’ai construit Bet-Bamot, car elle était détruite. J’ai construit Bosor, car elle était en ruine, avec cinquante hommes de Dibon, car tout Dibon m’était soumis. J’ai régné ... cent avec les villes que j’ai ajoutées au pays. J’ai construit ... Madaba, Bet-Diblatan et Bet-Ba’al-Me’on. J’ai élevé là ....troupeaux du pays. Et Horonan où demeurait ... Et Kamosh me dit : “Descends et combats contre Horonan”. J’allai (et je combattis contre la ville et je la pris ; et) Kamosh y (demeura) sous mon règne .... de là ... C’est moi qui ... »

I am Mesha, son of KMSYT (Kemosh[-yat]), the king of Moab, the Dibonite. My father was king of Moab thirty years, and I reigned after my father. And I built this high-place for Kemosh in QRH ("the citadel"), a high place of [sal-] vation because he saved me from all the kings (or "all the attackers"), and because let me be victorious over all my adversaries. Omri was king of Israel and he oppressed Moab for many days because Kemosh was angry with his land. And his son replaced him; and he also said, "I will oppress Moab". In my days he spoke thus.
But I was victorious over him and his house. And Israel suffered everlasting destruction, And Omri had conquered the land of Madaba, and he dwelt there during his reign and half the reign of his son, forty years. But Kemosh returned it in my days. So I [re]built Baal Meon, and I the water reservoir in it. And I bu[ilt] Qiryaten. The man of Gad had dwelt in Ataroth from of old; and the king of Israel built Ataroth for him. But I fought against the city and took it. And I slew all the people [and] the city became the property of Kemosh and Moab. And I carried from there the altar for its DVDH ("its Davidic altar"?) and I dragged it before Kemosh in Qerioit, and I settled in it men of Sharon m[en] of Maharit. And Kemosh said to me, "Go! Seize Nebo against Israel." so I proceeded by night and fought with it from the crack of dawn to midday, and I took it and I slew all of them: seven thousand men and boys, and women and gi and maidens because I had dedicated it to Ashtar Kemosh I took [the ves-] sels of YHWH, and I dragged them before Kemosh. And the king of Israel had built Yahaz, and he dwelt in it while he was fighting with me, but Kemosh drove him out before me. so I took from Moab two hundred men, all his captains. And I brought them to Yahaz, And I seized it in order to add (it) to Dibon. I (myself) have built the 'citadel', 'the wall(s) of the forest' and the wall of the 'acropolis'. And I built its gates; And I built its towers. And I built a royal palace; and I made the ramparts for the reservo[ir for] water in the midst of the city. But there was no cistern in the midst of the city, in the 'citadel,' so I said to all the people, "Make [for] yourselves each man a cistern in his house". And I hewed the shaft for the 'citadel' with prisoners of Israel. I built Aroer, and I made the highway in the Arnon.
I built Beth-Bamot, because it was in ruins. I built Bezer, because it was a ruin [with] the armed men of Dibon because all of Dibon was under orders and I ruled [ove]r [the] hundreds in the towns which I have annexed to the land. And I built Medeba and Beth-Diblaten and Beth-Baal-Meon, and I carried there [my herdsmen] [to herd] the small cattle of the land, and Horonain, in it dwelt ... [and] Kemosh [s]aid to me, "Go down, fight against Horonain". And I went down [and I fought with the city and I took it and] Kemosh [re]turned it in my days.
